Women (and minorities) are asked to serve on committees, in part to help fulfill the requirement for diverse committees. The evidence is mounting that there is a disproportionate time spent with service by women than men and this can stagnate careers. Good mentors are aware of this and can help protect women faculty and be a part of the institutional transformation that rewards leadership in service roles as part of the tenure and promotion process.
