Interesting piece in the Chronicle of Higher Education from Dr. David Leonard, who advocates for the voices of academic men and women seeking equitable parenting/care-giving partnerships in non-traditional families. Much of the current research reinforces traditional roles (and thus pits the mother against the father) rather than looking at institutional policies & work climates and how these antiquated vestiges force non-traditional families to make more traditional decisions. Lehigh ADVANCE programs and others strive to transform the institution.
Blame the Institution not Just the Fathers
Research suggests women may be drawn more to collaborative and interdisciplinary research. Lehigh ADVANCE will shed light on to what extent and how interdisciplinary work is gendered, not only in terms of participation but in terms of outcomes.
