Lehigh BIOS Wins a GAANN to Broaden Participation
The BIOS Department graduate program was awarded a GAANN award (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need) from the Department of Education. GAANN exists for the purpose of increasing the population of underrepresented groups of strong academic standing in professional fields. The National Science Foundation has updated the data on Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering (July 2012). This report provides statistical information about the participation of women, minorities, and persons with disabilities in science and engineering education and employment. Why women leave academia and why universities should be worried
"Women PhD candidates had one experience that men never have. They were told that they would encounter problems along the way simply because they are women." A recent study of Chemistry PhDs in the UK reveals insights that echo patterns in the United States and support the need for educating faculty and university leadership about gendered biases and barriers towards and within the professoriate.

On April 26, thirty-nine research projects were presented by undergraduate students at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, supported by a Core Competencies Grant from the provost’s office and sponsored by Alpha Chi Sigma, the chemistry fraternity. The scholarship represented is astounding and represents CAS, CBE, and RCEAS.
